During this International Astrology Conference, the city saw a huge number of astrology lovers and enthusiasts from around the globe flocking into the city to discuss and debate the varied issues pertaining to astrology. In this conference, many different astrological features where discussed, including the ancient ‘Prasnam Vekkal’ (suggesting the causes of certain events and their possible remedial measures) to ‘Vastu Doshas’ (the ill-effects of wrong construction style of buildings).
Highlights The conference not only highlighted Kerala astrology and its varied forms, but also included Sanskrit verses and Yoga classes for people. The workshop was organised by UK based astrologer, Komilla Sutton, who has been into astrology in UK and US since 1995.Sutton, who is also an astrology teacher, reportedly stated that 18 practising astrologers and researchers from 12 countries, including Wilfredo from Puerto Rico and Keiko Ito from Japan, participated in the workshop.
The delegates were given practical instructions on ways to use the 'cowries',a key factor in determining the cause and nature of events. It was reported that Kerala astrology was widely appreciated by the delegates.Besides Kerala astrology, classes on Sanskrit verses and yoga were also held.
Practicality In this conference it was clearly seen that apart from Indian tradition, culture and philosophy, people are now slowly showing keen interest in Indian astrology too. The conference gave an in-depth study into the myriad aspects of Kerala astrology and helped people to know and understand this unique timeless traditional style of astrology that remains as relevant in these modern times.
Astrologer Kailasnath from Parappanangadi near Kozhikode was here to take lessons for delegates and participants attending the Conference.According to him, there is great demand for the Kerala method of astrology because of some unique aspects.Kailasnath, who described himself as a student of astrology since 24 years, said the workshop was an effort to teach delegates the unique aspects of the state's rich astrological wisdom, particularly 'prasnam vekkal.'
Alexander from Latvia, who practises astrology full time, said there was huge interest in this ancient science in his country. Drawn by the uniqueness of Kerala astrology, John Ryder from Australia, a structural engineer, who takes classes in Melbourne University on Indian Astrology, was here alongwith other practising astrologers to learn ways to remove 'vastu doshas'.Dr Ajith Sinha, Sanskrit scholar from Mumbai, took classes in Sanskrit.
Genuine interest Sutton stated that although there was scepticism earlier about Indian astrology, now there was 'deep interest' too. Westerners are interested in astrology as they are interested in Indian philosophy and spirituality, she said. For them, it is a spiritual journey to know themselves. For her, astrology was always a source of fascination which had started off as a mere hobby. The interest on Indian astrology began during the eighties and could be attributed to gurus like the late Mahesh Yogi, she said.
It was decided that the next workshop would be held in 2009, and the subject will be Planet 'Shani' (Saturn).
